To make this easier to understand, please take a look at this analogy.
Two people are exploring the jungle and suddenly they are attacked by an angry gorilla that wants bananas. One guy panics and starts running away. The other guy takes his gear off first including the heavy backpack, camera, rain jacket, etc and then starts running at full speed. He is smart to the fact that all he has to do is outrun the first guy to survive. Although the first guy got a head start, he is soon smoked in the foot race by the other guy and that leads to his demise.
We approach local rankings in a much similar way. First, we study the top players in any niche + city we go into. Next, we reverse engineer all the factors that got them to the top. Once we gather that information we know what it’s going to take to beat them and it’s only a matter of time before we smoke them in the foot race to the top 3 of the map pack. The great thing is that even 1 or 2 steps ahead of the competition is enough. In most cases however after a while we have sprinted so far that even if they try they cannot catch up.
Step 1: Identity The Top Players In Your Market
Step 1 is very important because it allows us to accurately research and analyze your competition. Using a clean browser with history and cache cleared, we begin our search. It’s important to have a clean browser so that our search results aren’t affected by previous page visit history.
We can now identify who the top players in your market are making the most money. A good indicator of who that is is by looking at the top 3 players in the map pack (3 businesses you see in Google maps when your search is complete).
If we scroll down past the Google maps section, we will see a list of websites. We call these sites “ranked” since they are showing up on page 1 of Google for the keyword you searched.
Page 1 of Google is where all the money is made! Because let’s be honest, when searching for a service how often do you scroll past page 1?
Here’s where it all comes together. If you do these searches yourself you will notice that companies that rank in the top 3 of Google maps also have their website showing up on the first page of Google! The reason for this is strong website SEO. Google’s search algorithm has assessed these websites and has voted them the most relevant to your “search term” or as we call it in marketing “keyword”. So having a strong website will be the main factor to ranking your Google maps listing and get more business.
Step 2: Reverse Engineer The Top Guy
Now that we know who the top guy is, we want to look at how he got there and what it will take to beat him.
Google, as we know it, is just an algorithm. It does not have any emotions, and it’s not biased towards certain companies with an online presence over others.
So why is it that certain companies are shown in Google searches and others are not?
There is a reason and it’s due to the quality of backlinks and content that is present on one site vs the other.
The top guy has the best backlink profile and the most authoritative content. By looking at the top guy’s profile, we can understand exactly how much needs to be done to beat him so that Google places you on top!
Google is a business that makes most of its money from Google ADS revenue. That is why they need to continuously show the consumer the most accurate search results data.
This is how websites are ranked. Based on how relevant the content of the website is, and what other people are saying about your website online (backlinks).
Think of BACKLINKS as votes. The more votes you have, the more Google deems your site worthy to be shown.
Step 3: Build Stronger That The Top Guy
This is where the majority of the High-Level SEO skills come in.
As we’ve prior learned, backlinks to your site are a strongly influential part to ranking your site. Google, however, understands that very often SEO companies abuse this technique and use spammy links. That’s why in 2017 the algorithm changed and so has the backlinking process.
There are certain spam filters in place and that is why understanding what links will benefit you and which ones will hurt your website is important.

In Google’s eyes, each time a website links to your site it acts like a vote. All votes however are not rated equal.
Today, backlink relevance (how relevant the site is linking to yours) is one of the greatest factors of SEO.
